Dating scams—often called romance scams—happen when a fraudster creates a fake online profile to gain your trust and eventually steal your money or personal information. These scammers typically operate on dating apps or social media, quickly showering their targets with affection and moving the conversation to private messaging apps. They often make excuses for why they can never meet in person or video chat, such as being stationed overseas, working on an oil rig, or traveling for business. Once an emotional connection is established, they will invent an emergency—like a medical crisis, a legal issue, or a sudden travel problem—and ask you to send money, buy gift cards, or share financial details. To protect yourself from online dating scams, keep the following red flags in mind: Fast-Moving Relationships: Scammers will often profess deep feelings or love incredibly quickly, sometimes within just a few days of matching. Refusal to Video Chat: They will consistently make excuses to avoid showing their face on a live video call. Urgent Requests for Money: No matter how believable the story sounds, never send money, gift cards, or cryptocurrency to someone you have only met online. Suspicious Photos: Their profile pictures often look highly professional or overly polished. You can use a reverse-image search to see if their photos are stolen from someone else's real account.
