missed Court date ppp scam

got a call from someone saying there county sheriff saying I missed a court hearing about my ppp loan an need to make a payment to freeze my arrest warrant and get a new court date. they wanted crypto zelle or cash app payment immediately or I'd be arrested was told not to contact anyone unless it was to get the help with the payment an I couldn't tell them why I needed the money else I would be arrested.

scam. tell them you're getting in the car and driving to the sheriff's office right now. ask for the address etc. they'll backpedal and assure you that isn't necessary, that you just need to get a prepaid cc and give them the card number. pretend to stop at a store and do that but don't give them the number, say you'll give them the card info in person when you get the the sheriff's office (again don't actually buy anything or go anywhere - unless you fancy a drive.) alternative idea - pretend your roommate, spouse, boss is a sherrifs deputy and pretend to ask them about it. I once did a 3way call with the local PD and asked why they only took green dot cards as payment. the scammer kept insisting he was an officer in a different department - the fraud department - so I just dropped off the call and left him speaking with the county clerk. tldr if this sounds like too much work just hang up and block the number. bonus points if you live in a state where calling you repeatedly is considered harassment - threaten to report them then hang up and block. I would report it to local law enforcement though. website, social media, these creeps target seniors and seem to work in teams.

I told them I didn't have a car so they will need to come pick me up. Then I thanked them for the call and hung up. They did not call back.
