The "KBC" Jackpot Mirage

The WhatsApp message arrived with a flashy banner featuring Amitabh Bachchan and the Kaun Banega Crorepati logo. "Congratulations! Your mobile number has won the ₹25 Lakhs KBC Lucky Draw. To claim your prize, contact our Lucky Draw Manager, Mr. Sharma, at [PHONE]-XXXXXXXXXX." I lived in a small apartment in Hyderabad, and ₹25 Lakhs felt like a ticket to a new life. I called the number. "Mr. Sharma" sounded incredibly humble. He sent me a photo of a "Winner's Certificate" and a picture of a cheque already written in my name. "There is just one small formality," he whispered. "Since it’s a huge amount, the bank requires a 'File Processing Fee' of ₹12,500. Once you pay this, the money will be credited to your account in 30 minutes." I was so blinded by the zeroes on that fake cheque that I didn't stop to think. I sent the money. Ten minutes later, he called back. "Sir, the GST department has blocked the transfer. You need to pay an additional ₹45,000 as 'Tax Clearance' which is refundable." The "refundable" part was the giveaway. I realized I wasn't being rewarded; I was being milked. I asked for his office address, and he immediately blocked me. The "Jackpot" was nothing but a well-designed image and a hungry scammer.
