The Voice of a Stranger

The phone rang while I was stuck in Ahmedabad traffic. It was my younger brother’s name on the caller ID. "Bhai, I’ve been in a terrible accident," the voice sobbed. It sounded exactly like him—the same frantic pitch, the same slight stutter when he’s nervous. "The other driver is threatening to call the police. I need ₹50,000 for a settlement right now or they’ll take me to the station. Please, don't tell Mom." I was already opening my banking app, my hands shaking. But then, a tiny detail clicked. My brother was supposed to be on a flight to Chennai at that exact hour. "Wait," I said, "What’s the name of our first pet?" The line went silent for three seconds. Then, the "brother" started crying harder, shouting that he didn't have time for games. I hung up and called his actual number. He picked up immediately, sounding bored, waiting at his boarding gate. It was an AI Voice Clone. Scammers had scraped a short video from his public Instagram, cloned his voice, and "spoofed" his phone number to stage a fake emergency.
