Fraud Detection FAQs

This FAQ explains how Truecaller helps protect you from messaging fraud through Fraud Alerts. It covers how suspicious messages and potentially malicious links in messages are identified, how fraud warnings are shown to users, and how Truecaller protects your privacy while providing these capabilities.

Truecaller analyzes incoming messages from senders that are not saved in your contacts or senders you have never interacted with before. It scans these messages for fraud text patterns, suspicious sender signals, and malicious links.

Privacy is at the core of our fraud detection system through a hybrid approach:

  • All message scanning happens directly on your device to protect your privacy.
  • If a message contains a link, only the link is securely sent to Truecaller backend servers to be scanned against trusted, secure third-party threat intelligence databases. This allows us to detect the latest phishing and scam websites in real time without compromising the privacy of your personal conversations.

No. Your raw URLs are never shared or transmitted to any third party. To check if a link is malicious while strictly protecting your privacy, only a partial hash of the URL might be sent to trusted third-party security partners to verify if it matches known threat signatures. The full URL and your personal data remain protected.

If Truecaller flags an incoming message as a potential fraud, you will receive a real-time warning notification. The message will automatically be routed to your Spam tab, and clear fraud indicators will be displayed inside the conversation view so you know exactly why it was flagged.

You can always remove these restrictions by tapping "Mark as safe." You will then be asked to classify how important the sender is to you. Once marked as safe, all restrictions on the sender and their messages are immediately lifted. We also use this feedback to train and improve our detection models continuously.

Your safety is our top priority. To protect you, we disable interactions for potentially fraud messages and senders. Preventing actions like clicking on links or dialing provided numbers ensures you aren't left vulnerable to scams or malicious software.

You can help keep the community safe by reporting fraudulent senders/messages directly within the app:

  • To report a sender: Open the conversation thread, tap the Report button, and select "Report fraud."
  • To report a specific message: Long-press the message to select it, tap Report, and select "Report fraud."

If you'd prefer not to have your messages scanned, you can disable the feature at any time by going to Truecaller > Settings > Messaging > Fraud Alerts and toggling it off. Disabling Fraud alerts makes you more vulnerable to messaging fraud.
