Truecaller recently became aware, through news reports about a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed in the Hon’ble Bombay High Court regarding unauthorised use of user data. From the news reports it appears that the PIL also mentions Truecaller amongst few other respondents. We have not received any formal communication regarding the PIL so far. Once we receive more details, we will be in a position to comment further. 

Based on the press articles we have reviewed so far, the PIL appearsto state that Truecaller shares personal data with certain third parties without consent to benefit the company financially. This is false information.

Truecaller is a privacy focused service, built on trust. We are compliant with data privacy laws and stand ready to comply with other data protection laws anywhere in the world. In addition to this, Truecaller practices ‘data minimisation’ – taking only the data required for our service to work, and nothing else. Moreover, it is important to note that pursuant to a strategic business decision last year, Truecaller discontinued offering Unified Payments Interface (UPI) payment services since March 2021.

In response, we would like to assure all Truecaller users that their data is safe. Truecaller does not sell user data. We care deeply about our users and their data, and would like to assure them that we securely handle their data and process it as per our Privacy Policy.

We have stringent measures in place and a strong DNA in the company to do what is best for our users, period. Truecaller data is safe, stored 100% in India (without any foreign backups or mirrors) and has the highest levels of protection.
