Today is officially the first day of summer! It is a day to celebrate the astronomical summer solstice , which is the longest day of the year.

Midsummer celebrations are most popular in European countries, but also is acknowledged in North America, South America and Australia. In Sweden, this holiday is described as ‘Midsommer,’ the literal meaning of mid-summer. In ancient legend, midsummer was a night when magic and spirits would be most active. so people would light bonfires to ward them off.

In modern day, people still light bonfires for fun, but also indulge in traditional Swedish foods, dance around maypoles, put flowers in their hair, and sing traditional songs.

Happy summer everyone!
