Fake police calls are rising again – what to watch out for in Sweden

An old phone scam is making a comeback in Sweden. People are receiving calls in English from someone claiming to be a police officer or from Interpol. The aim is simple: to scare you into handing over money or personal information.

This is not a new scam, but it’s spreading again. The method relies on creating panic, sounding official, and getting you to act fast.

How the scam works

It usually starts with an automated message in English, claiming your ID has been involved in a crime or that you’re wanted by the police. You’re then connected to a person pretending to be an officer, sometimes with background noise to make it sound more convincing.

They might tell you:

  • Your personal identity number has been linked to criminal activity
  • Your identity has been stolen
  • You’ve been arrested in your absence and need to take urgent action

You’ll be asked to verify your identity with BankID, log in to your bank, or transfer money to a so-called “safe account.” In some cases, the threat of prison or deportation is used to pressure you.

What the police will never do

In Sweden, the police will never:

  • Call you unexpectedly and speak English (unless you’ve requested it)
  • Ask you to use BankID or log in to your bank over the phone
  • Demand that you transfer money

If something feels wrong – hang up. Call 114 14 to verify any suspicious contact.
